The town of Bar Harbor is the center of activity for the Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park area. Located on the northwestern corner of Mt. Desert Island, Bar Harbor is the island's largest town as well as the location of most of the island's restaurants and accommodations. From Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and the rest of the island are easily accessible. Bar Harbor achieved international fame during the later half of the last century as the summer getaway of the country's wealthiest families. These families erected grand summer "cottages" in which the households and their entourages could escape the summer heat in the metropolitan areas of the Northeast. Today, some of those grand summer homes remain. Ledgelawn Inn is one of the few such summer "cottages" restored as a lovely inn.
Mt. Desert Island
When you cross the bridge from the mainland you immediately notice that this is no ordinary place. The unspoiled beauty of "Downeast" Maine is evident everywhere you look. Enjoy lobster hauled fresh from the sea, delight in the magnificent coastal scenery and shop for native treasures. Your innkeepers at Ledgelawn Inn will be happy to assist you in getting the most out of your Bar Harbor stay.
Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park occupies about half of Mt. Desert Island and includes a host of unique sites and wonders including the famous Otter Cliffs, Cadillac Mountain, the highest coastal point in the Eastern United States, the scenic Park Loop Drive and the famous carriage trails and stone bridges. Nowhere else is the scenic beauty of coastal Maine more accessible than in Acadia National Park. The attractions of Acadia National Park can be accessed via car, by foot, by horse-drawn carriage or by bicycle. Your innkeepers at Ledgelawn Inn will be happy to assist you in arranging any of these activities.
